Cummings’ creations, which include the handcrafted club, mounted on a custom display, complete with distinctive personalization elements, have become the coveted possession of many golf enthusiasts and are considered by some to be the ultimate golf gift.
The custom putters are typically made with a persimmon head, in a traditional shape with a flat lie. A piece of ram’s horn is inlaid in the sole to create the leading edge and is held in place with wooden pins and hide glue. This technique protects the club from the repeated contact with the ground. Molten lead is poured and carefully hammered in the back of the head to produce the desired weight and balance. The hickory shaft is hand-turned on a wood lathe.Club displays can be personalized to your liking for gifts or special events Joining the shaft to the head is the critical spliced joint, the greatest test of the Maker’s skill and creativity. After careful alignment and gluing, it is hand-filed to exact dimensions to produce a sure but delicate touch. The club is then sanded and rubbed with a mixture of pitch and oil to reveal the beauty of the wood’s grain. To further strengthen the joint, it is wrapped with twine treated with pitch.
The grip is hand-cut sheepskin wrapped over a wool underlisting. Each of these time-consuming steps must be completed perfectly, for only then can the head be proudly stamped with the clubmaker’s name and logo.
Because each club is unique and handcrafted, Martin speaks personally with the gift giver or recipient to get details about where it will be displayed and other preferences before beginning on your special project.
