Handcrafted Golf Clubs and Putters
Tucked away in the mountains of West Virginia is a unique shop that produces wooden golf clubs handcrafted using methods that were perfected more than two centuries ago. The proprietor, Martin Cummings, takes a great deal of pride in adhering to the traditions that have been passed from master to apprentice for more than 250 years.
By the mid-1700s, the crafting of wooden golf clubs had evolved into an art form that demanded a rare set of skills that are all but lost today. This was particularly true of the crafting of putters due largely to their inherently personal nature. In the creation of a wooden putter, one called upon the artistry of a special clubmaker – “A Maker of Putters.” It is this title that Cummings earned after apprenticing at Auchterlonies Golf Shop in St. Andrews in Scotland.
Cummings’ creations, which include the handcrafted club, mounted on a custom display, complete with distinctive personalization elements, have become the coveted possession of many golf enthusiasts and are considered by some to be the ultimate golf gift.
But, such a special collector’s item is not created overnight, often taking 80-100 hours to complete. The original display design came after many years of hard work and study and was inspired by Cummings’ desire to combine his two loves – woodworking and golf. He has spent almost 15 years perfecting this lost art and has become one of only a handful of artisans in the world who continue to make the wooden clubs in this manner.
Proudly displayed from corporate board rooms to the homes of billionaires and collectors of sports memorabilia, some might find it ironic that the exquisite pieces are handcrafted and assembled in a remote and rustic barn structure in the wilds of West Virginia, but to Cummings, it is the perfect setting in which to practice his craft.
